REDEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT EXHIBITION OF HERMOYPOLIS INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM

The proposed restructuring
of the Hermoupolis Industrial Museum’s
permanent exhibition
attempts to present the island’ s
industrial heritage
through the inhabitants’ entrepreneurship
and ability to adjust to the vast historical
and social economical changes
that took place in the course of time.

Visitors are welcomed to experience
a flowing change of atmosphere
through the creation of a “live engraving” enviroment.
For each chronological period at hand,
a background exhibition surface is provided that contains
the cultural, historical and socio-economical information.
The main technological sector,
one that thrived in the same period,
is displayed at the center of each unit.
As a result, the restructuring of the existing exhibition
is proposed to work in two concentric circles, so to speak:

1. The outer circle via “wall” elements
that will present texts, images, etc and

2. The inner one which will be formed
by a net of scaffoldings, showcasing
the key exhibits of the collection.

Textures, materials and design forms are all elements
used to provide each unit with a special “era character”,
in a discrete, reminding way.
Some coverall showcases are installed, in certain places,
in order to create a more theatrical atmosphere,
in clear distinction to the technical feature
of the exhibition space.
A long timetable of the island’ s
most important moments and personalities
has been designed for the south stone wall.

The museum retail store and ticket services
was also redesigned, as well as
the starting- end point of the exhibition storytelling,
in the main entrance area.
